Scope and Contents

The collection consists of 3.4 linear feet of materials primarily related to the St. Berchman’s Industrial Life Insurance Company and the Women’s Auxiliary of the National Medical Association (WANMA). The materials include correspondence, memoranda, notes, administrative materials, and financial records. Other items include greeting cards, newspaper clippings, and ephemera. The collection also includes photographs of the Sheffield Family and their colleagues, the headquarters for the St. Berchman’s Industrial Life Insurance Company, as well as a pharmacy. Notable photographers include Florestine Perrault Collins, Villard Paddio, Henry Beadle and P.H. Polk.

Also included within the collection are Dr. Sheffield’s medical school degree, medical license and diplomas, as well as Mrs. Sheffield’s diplomas from high school and the Lena Richard Catering School. There are also panoramic photographs by the Lay Brothers, and of Dr. Sheffield’s graduating class from Meharry Medical College.

The collection provides insight into African Americans in healthcare, and the administrative practices and policies of St. Berchman’s Industrial Life Insurance Company.
