Scope and Contents

This collection is comprised of a single letter from Nicholas Bauer, Superintendent of Orleans Parish School Board, to "James E. Weathers and Petitioners" dated 6 August 1930. The letter reads: "Dear Sirs: The Orleans Parish School Board has considered your petition to establish a colored evening high school or in lieu of that, a continuation of the eight grade opportunities in night school work and has decided that at this time, because of financial reasons, it can not [sic] grant your request. Yours truly, Nicholas Bauer, Superintendent."

Biographical Note

Nicholas Bauer served as the Superintendent of the Orleans Parish Public Schools from 1923 to 1942.

Nicholas Bauer worked as a young boy in the grocery owned by his widowed mother in New Orleans, Louisiana, prior to attending McDonogh No. 17 School and the Boy's High School. He was valedictorian of his high school and attended Tulane University on a scholarship. He graduated with honors from Tulane and served as an assistant professor of chemistry at Tulane prior to teaching at his former high school in 1900.

Bauer became the assistant superintendent of schools at the age of 23, a position he held for seventeen years. He served as secretary of the Orleans Parish School Board and became superintendent in 1923. He retired in 1942. Bauer was an active member of the New Orleans community. He first married Ethel Chamberlain, with whom he had one child, Ethel. Mrs. Bauer passed away in 1918 and Bauer remarried to Edna Kane. Nicholas Bauer passed away, himself, on March 4, 1946.
