Clifford V. Johnson papers
Content Description
Clifford V. Johnson is the former Vice President for Development at Dillard University and Director of Development at the Amistad Research Center. He has also written short stories. His papers include three letters, one card, and a poem, entitled "The Backlash Blues" sent to Johnson from Langston Hughes. Johnson developed an acquaintance with Hughes in the mid 1960s when Johnson's short story "Old Blues Singers Never Die" was published in the anthology Best Short Stories by Negro Writers, edited by Hughes.
Other materials include publications that feature his writing, as well as collected publications. Of note is a 1967 issue of the French magazine Jeune Afrique that includes an article by Johnson on the death of Malcolm X and programs and brochures on theatrical productions of plays by LeRoi Jones. Also present are teacher and student manuals and research developed bu the Institue for Services to Education, Inc. under the Thirteen College Curriculum Program. The program was developed by the Institue to promote a curriculum change for historically Black colleges. Johnson co-authored many of the curriculum publications. Also included is a videotape that contains a program entitled Wild Women Never Get the Blues and a program on the International Sweethearts of Rhythm.
