Jesse J. Johnson papers
Content Description
The Jesse J. Johnson papers relate to Johnson's research and writings about African American men and women in the U.S. military. Johnson authored seven books on the topic, and his papers include news clippings about African American achievement, legal documents of civil rights cases in which Johnson was interested, church programs, lists and other printed items, as well as a small amount of correspondence.
The papers also include records of equal employment opportunity cases in which Johnson was plaintiff. They include complaints, statements, correspondence, clippings, transcripts of hearings, and printed items. Correspondence includes items generated by Elizabeth Johnson, the donor's wife. Business correspondence regarding the sale and distribution of Johnson's books is also included. The papers also contain information about Johnson's education and post-military activities. He received his bachelor's degree from Tougaloo College, a master's degree from Hampton University, and the LLB from the American Extension School of Law. He retired from the military in 1962, after twenty years in the service.
