The Association of Social and Behavioral Scientists, Inc. (ASBS) was founded in 1935 by Theophilus E. McKinney at Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, North Carolina to provide a forum for social science teachers in Negro colleges to assemble and discuss trends in education and the curricula needs of their students. The organization was established as the Association of Social Science Teachers and has grown into an interdisciplinary organization that continues to honor its rich history of examining critical issues that impact Black people.
