Content Description

The Robert Avon Bennett papers consists of correspondence, new clippings, church bulletins, speeches, sermons, and other printed items generated by Bennett in the course of his training as a minister in the Episcopal Church and in his practice of the profession. Items include notebooks for courses, programs, school catalogs, especially for the Episcopal Theological School where Bennett was appointed to the faculty as a graduate fellow, and other printed items. Foreign and domestic correspondence is included, some from fellow ministers abroad and in the United States. Lastly, a number of photographs are included.

Additionally, the collection contains manuscripts primarily for course work conducted Bennett during his doctoral studies at Harvard and at the General Theological Seminary in New York. A few items of correspondence about availability of Kierkegaard materials; one letter in Danish from Niels Thulstrup; a card and bibliography from Paul S. Minear of New Haven, Connecticut; and letters from Julian Blackwell and H.G. Knight of Blackwell's in Oxford, England complete the list of non-class papers, even though these items were generated to support Bennett's thesis research.

The printed items in the collection include two issues of the Harvard Business School Bulletin that pertain to the marriage of Robert and Marceline (1982).

Lastly, the papers document Reverend Robert Bennett and his work as the minister of St. James Episcopal Church in Baltimore, Maryland. These materials includes an updated resume, anniversary pamphlets, booklets, and programs from St. James Episcopal Church in Baltimore; scrapbook, bulletins, writings, and articles on Kenyon College; writings and correspondence regarding a National Council of Churches of Christ project of the Standing Liturgical Commission to develop a lectionary (a selection of readings taken from both the Old and New Testaments); writings and correspondence of The Inclusive Language Lectionary Committee; African Conference on Black Theology held in Ghana, 1974; Fulbright Fellowship scrapbook, letters, talks, press clippings concerning his studies at the University of Copenhagen for research on Danish philosopher, Soren Kierkegaard; materials on Reverend Bennett's aunt Mrs. Jessye E. Bennett public school teacher and principal of various elementary schools in Baltimore (circa 1930-1962). Lastly, a photograph of the pilgrimage from Baltimore church to St. Anne De Beaupere, Ontario, Canada, August 1955.
