Paul R. Valteau, Jr. served as civil sherriff of Orleans Parish for over 25 years. The papers of former Orleans Parish Civil Sheriff Paul R. Valteau, Jr. document Valteau’s service in that position and the various comunity outreach programs undertaken by the Civil Sheriff’s Office during his tenure. The material also documents aspects of New Orleans politics from the late 1970s through 2010. The collection consists of news clippings, minutes and agenda, pamphlets and brochures, invitations, certificates, topical files, campaign materials, photographs, audiovisual materials, and periodicals. The collection documents community organizations/projects supported by Valteau and/or the Civil Sheriff’s Office including the Southeastern Louisiana Boy Scouts (2007), Black History Honor Guard (Black business leaders honored by Civil Sherriff’s Office, 1988), Carver High School (1985-1986), Bicycle Giveaway Project (2002-2003), Neutral Ground Adoption (1983-1984), Jordan Noble Center for Special Education (1986-1991), School Talk Program (1988-1991), Leadership Skills Workshop (1989), Louisiana Sherriff’s Scholarship Program (1991-2002), Operation Mardi Gras (1990-2009), Christmas Toys Program (1992-2009), Boarding Vacant Home Project (1996-1997), and Friends of City Hall (1994-1995). The Reserve Deputies Association of the Civil Sheriff’s Office is documented by agenda and minutes (1986-2000), as well as rosters and handbooks (1991-2005). Newspaper clippings, news releases, as well as a series of photograph albums, also document Valteau and the Civil Sheriff’s Office. Additional files document Valteau’s community service or membership in various organizations, such as the Louisiana Sherriff’s Association (1990, undated), Urban League of Greater New Orleans (1994), The United Way (1992-1993), National Association of Black County Officials newsletters (1991), LINKS (1989) and the Louisiana Council for Policy Reform. Valteau also headed the Louisiana efforts toward Jesse Jackson's campaign for president of the United States. His papers pertain to Jackson's campaign and the Democratic National Convention in 1984. Materials include correspondence, speeches, printed items, financial records and pledge forms. Memorabilia includes buttons, floor passes, convention vest, packet and American flag issued to convention delegates to be waved during Walter Mondale's acceptance speech.
