Walker-Ish Family papers
Content Description
The Walker-Ish Family papers consist of correspondence, news clippings, programs, family obituaries, invitations (especially to presidential and gubernatorial inaugurations), photographs and albums, memorabilia and printed items about the families of Dr. Joseph Edison Walker of Memphis, Tennessee; his wife, Lelia O'Neal Walker; Dr. George W. Stanley Ish Sr.; and his wife, Lily Johnson Ish, of Little Rock, Arkansas. The families were united by the marriage of A. Maceo Walker, son of Dr. and Mrs. Walker, and Harriet Ish, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Ish. The Walkers were notable in insurance and banking in Memphis. Items about Maceo and Harriet form the bulk of the collection, with additional material about their children, Patricia, Tony and Harriette. Family members attended Fisk University and Talladega College. A. Maceo Walker succeeded his father as president of Universal Life Insurance Company and held several appointed posts in government. One of these was responsible for his travels to Africa. His wife was active in numerous community organizations, including the YWCA.
