Frederick A. Hargett papers

The bulk of the collection consists of Hargett’s typescript and hand script sermons and notations (circa 1938-1966). These materials are acidic and brittle; however in overall good condition. The bulk of the sermons are undated, with some copies of various orders of service interleaved within providing some estimation of dates for the sermons. Of interest is an early portrait of Hargett in his ministerial robes (circa 1936). Also included in the materials is a publication, Bible Messages: Addresses for Special Occasions Volume II published by M.E. & B.H. Willard in Danville, Illinois (1923). Of note is a publication, Ushers’ Guide of the Inter-Denominational Ushers Association of North Carolina (1937) including a typescript carbon of the rules and regulations of the Usher Board. Other publications include printed books and booklets (1871-1962) mainly consisting of addresses by individual clergy in the Afro-Christian Church at various meetings; minutes and proceedings for Eastern Atlantic Christian Conference, the North Carolina Christian Conference, and the Lincoln Colored Christian Conference and the Women’s Missionary Convention; a Spanish language copy of the New Testament of the Bible; hymns, spirituals, and worship service volumes; and two copies of biographical historical texts by J.F. Burnett about Elias Smith, Horace Man, and Reverend Abner Jones. Lastly, a small amount of material regarding Mrs. Florence Hargett including a certificate for her missionary services (November 1962) and examples of her clerical coursework (circa 1946-47), as well as collected orders of service and programs for Hargett’s tenure at St. Stephens Congregational Christian Church in Greensboro, North Carolina.
