Reverend Dr. Charles Shelby Rooks is a retired theologian of the United Church of Christ and served as president and executive director of a number of theological institutions, including Chicago Theological Seminary President from 1974-1984 and Executive Vice President of the United Church Board for Homeland Ministries from 1984-1992. He also authored a number of books. His papers document his life and career as a theologian and include correspondence, sermons, writings, news articles, photographs, awards and certificates, and collected writings, periodicals, and books. The materials cover Rooks' involvement in various organizations, schools, and religious bodies such as United Church Board for Homeland Ministries, Society for the Study of Black Religion, Fisk University, Union Theological Seminary, Houston-Tillotson College, and United Church of Christ churches around the country.
