The papers of educator and husband of Clarie Collins Harvey, Martin Luther Harvey Jr. include correspondence (circa 1940s-1976), letters of appointment as Dean of Student Affairs at Southern University, invitations, programs, sermons, speeches, news clippings, certificates, photograph albums, memorabilia, and other printed items.
A native of Newburgh, New York, Harvey was Dean of Student Affairs at Southern University for thirty-two years. The papers document his activities in that position, as well as others. He was national director of youth work for the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church (1934-1942), president of the United Christian Youth Council of North America (1936-1939), a delegate to the World Christian Conference at Tambaram Christian College in Madras, India (1938), delegate to the World Christian Youth Conference in Amsterdam (1939), Dean of Men at Clark College in Atlanta (1942-1943), academic dean at Samuel Huston in Austin, Texas (1943-1944), leader of the African Student Study and Work Camp Project for Liberia (the pilot program of Operation Crossroads Africa, 1958), guest pastor of Petty Memorial AME Zion Church in New Orleans, and namesake for the auditorium-gymnasium at Southern University in Baton Rouge (1979).
