Medgar Evers College records
Content Description
Medgar Evers College, located in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, is a college within the City University of New York system. The college was named for civil rights leader Medgar Evers, who was killed in his native state of Mississippi in 1963. The college opened its doors in 1971 with the idea of expanding educational opportunities for the community's gifted, young, returning veterans, and a diverse adult population. The records include correspondence, rosters, invitations, annual reports, programs, newsletters, news clippings, broadsides and a copy of the student newspaper ADAFI. Annual reports number one through five (1976-1981) are included, and a copy of the Plan of Governance for the college. Agenda and minutes of the college's community council, the legislative body of the college, account for the largest group of items in the records. Commencement speakers include: Jerome H. Holland, Ernesta Procope, J. Oscar Lee, William Howard, Marcella Maxwell, Warren Marr II, and Richard D. Trent.
