Content Description

The papers of Detroit educator and businessman Estemore Alvis Wolfe document his work both in Detroit, Michigan, and in Jackson, Mississippi. He was vice president and secretary of the Wright Mutual Insurance Company, which he co-founded; president of the Detroit chapter of Friends of Amistad; and president of the National Alumni Association of Jackson State University, and president of its Detroit chapter. His papers contain biographical and genealogical materials, as well as materials reflecting his work and interest in the previously mentioned organizations. The 1982 addendum pertains to Wolfe's family, Wright Mutual Insurance Company, Jackson State University and its alumni association, numerous other colleges in Mississippi and elsewhere, Central Methodist Church, the White House Conference, committees on which Wolfe served, and other activities. Included among the papers are correspondence, notes, news clippings, financial records, membership cards and printed items. As a member and chief officer of the Detroit chapter of the Friends of Amistad, Wolfe included items about the chapter's activities and about his involvement with friends organizations on the national level. Among the names in the collection are Senator Edward W. Brooks, William A. Clement, and Warren Marr II. The 1984 addendum contains material related to Wolfe's work and association with Jackson State University, Wright Mutual Insurance Company and Friends of Amistad, as well as his family, church and civic activities. Items of interest include those concerning the family of John Wesley Dobbs, particularly Willie Dobbs Blackburn. Personal items pertaining to the education and employment of Wolfe also expand existing files regarding these matters in previous donations. Among the correspondents are various presidents of Jackson State University and Mississippi friends and relatives; executives of Friends of Amistad at the national and chapter levels; and business associates, relatives and friends. Estemore Alvis Wolfe died December 12, 2001 at the age of 82.
