Content Description

National Neighbors, known later as the National Federation for Neighborhood Diversity, was founded in May 1971 as a nonprofit federation of interracial neighborhoods. Its goal was "to foster and encourage successful multiracial neighborhoods throughout the United States." The regional structure was established in 1975. The executive director and nine volunteer regional coordinators directed all regional activities, especially the regional conferences, and published regional newsletters as well as visited existing and potential member groups. Neighbors: A Publication on Interracial Living is published five times a year by the organization. Record types include correspondence, bylaws, agenda and minutes, clippings, press releases, lists, photographs, typescripts of articles, and other printed items. Administrative records, collected items, regional reports and other materials are included. Newsletters from various member groups are an important record group, and neighborhoods such as Starrett City in New York, Broadmoor in New Orleans, and a host of other neighborhoods are represented in the records. Various directors are among the correspondents, including Nicholas Di Sileo, Anne E. Schreuder, and Jim Kalish. Other correspondents include New York Mayor Ed Koch, Morris Milgram, Poppy Cannon, Doris Hicks, Vernon E. Douglas, John Michener, and Charles Bromley.
