Content Description

This collection consists of materials collected by William M. Steen, who served as an Africa Area Specialist with the U.S. Department of Labor and was an early advocate of Ethiopia in Washington, DC. The materials conern trade union movements in the United States and Africa. Organizations represented in the collection include the U.S. Department of Labor, the International Labor Office in Geneva, the United Nations, the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions, and the African Trade Union Confederation. The collection contains correspondence and memoranda, collected periodicals and publications, conference materials and reports, news clippings, and posters. Of note is a typescript entitled "PanAfricanism and the African Trade Union Movement: A Compendium of Historical Documents, 1959-1963" and a collection of news clippings on the death of Kenyan labor leader and minister Tom Mboya.
