Louisiana Weekly photograph collection

 Collection
Identifier: 231

Scope and Contents

The Louisiana Weekly photograph collection is comprised mainly of file photographs, both black and white and color, as well as a small number of non-photographic items, including correspondence and typescripts. As file photographs many, although not all, of the photographs were published in issues of The Louisiana Weekly. Some of the photographs are Associated Press or from agencies releasing publicity about their clients (performing artists). The collection also includes photographs by New Orleans photographers, professional as well as amateur; prominent among these photographers is Porter's Photo News (Marion and Charlene Porter). The photos document many aspects of life in Louisiana and events that transpired during the period covered. Demonstrations, debutante balls and parties, church activities, etc. are a part of the photographic record.

The collection is divided into three series: Individuals, Organizations and Subjects, and Non-photographic. Photographs of individuals include local and national figures, from high school students to civil rights leaders; these are arranged alphabetically by last name. Organizations and subjects are arranged alphabetical by name of organization or topic. Topics include arts and entertainment, business, social and civic organizations, education, fashion, government agencies, medicine, law enforcement, recreation, religious organizations, Mardi Gras, and sports. Non-photographic materials include three folders of correspondence, press releases, advertisements, and editorials and cartoons related to New Orleans Mayor Ernest N. "Dutch" Morial.
