Creole Affair collection
Content Description
Consisting of photocopies and a microfilm reel from the National Archives, this collection includes correspondence, argument of counsel, insurance papers, and a notebook. The Creole was a brig on which a group of slaves were being transported from Norfolk to New Orleans and mutinied, killing a passenger, wounding the captain, and forcing the crew to sail the vessel to Nassau. Once the vessel reached British soil, some of the slaves were liberated. The leaders of the insurrection were imprisoned. The ship eventually sailed for New Orleans from Nassau; owners of the slaves freed at that point protested the actions of the British as illegal, and legal action ensued for the recovery of losses. This collection pertains to those proceedings.
