Clifton H. Johnson papers

The collection has been divided into four series of correspondence, which includes sub-series for both personal (1944-2003) and professional (1952-2003) correspondence, organizational materials (1985-2003), writings by Dr. Johnson (1993-2001, n.d.) and collected items and oversized materials (1945-2003) including awards, certificates, clippings and ephemera.

The collection mainly consists of professional papers, with the bulk documenting the activities of organizations with which Dr. Johnson worked. Of interest in Dr. Johnson’s professional correspondence are files regarding donations of manuscript collections to the Amistad Research Center, where Dr. Johnson was involved. General correspondence files are in chronological order followed by specific individuals, organizations, and topics in alphabetical order. Organizational materials are arranged in groups alphabetically by the name of the organization. Of interest are Dr. Johnson’s files kept during his consulting work with DreamWorks Pictures for the production of the feature film, Amistad by Steven Spielberg. Collected items and oversize materials, including publications, are generally arranged alphabetically by format.
