Content Description
Collection pertains to Dr. Fred Thomas Jones Sr., from Homer, Louisiana, and a graduate from Meharry Medical College. He opened the first hospital for African Americans in Little Rock, Arkansas, in 1919, and founded the Great Southern Hospital in Pine Bluff, Arkansas in 1932. This small collection consists of papers collected and written by Marie Jones Griffin, Dr. Jones youngest daughter. Included is a 16-page biography written by Griffin about her and her mother, Katie Griffin, which contains genealogical information on both the Chandler and Jones families of Louisiana. Also included is a letter from Dr. Jones to his daughter, Myrtle; news clippings' photographs of the family; advertisements for Dr. Jones hospital and medical practice as well as an advertisement for Jones Brothers Laboratories run by Fred T. Jones Jr.; Dr. Jones funeral program; and the 1935 program for the annual meeting of the Arkansas Medical, Dental and Pharmaceutical Association. Some materials are photocopies.
