Samuel Dilworth-Leslie papers

Pianist Samuel Dilworth-Leslie was born in Savannah, Georgia, in 1932. He began playing the piano at the age of three. He graduated from the New York City High School of Music and Art (1951) and attained a Bachelor of Music (1954) and two Masters of Music degrees from the Manhattan School of Music and Columbia University (1956).  He furthered his education at the American Conservatory of Music (1966) in Fountainebleau, France, where he studied with Gabriel Faure’s famous pupil Nadia Boulanger.  He became interested in Fraure’s neglected piano compositions during his time in Paris and is most well known for this Faure recordings and lecture recitals on Chopin.  He studied with pianists A. Gautlier-Leon, Mieczyslaw Munz, and Dora Zaslavsky. He has performed internationally throughout his career including visits to Europe, the Soviet Union, and the Caribbean.  He was a Professor of Music at the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University.
