A.P. Tureaud papers addendum

The addition to the A.P. Tureaud papers contains records of civil rights cases, correspondence, collected material, and records related to the Knights of Peter Claver, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, and other organizations. The correspondence files contain letters from Daniel Byrd, O.C.W. Taylor, Mordecai W. Johnson, and Jim Moreau. The correspondence files pertaining to Daniel Byrd concern voter registration problems in Jackson Parish. Present is a letter honoring Herman Sweatt from the Texas Council of Negro Organizations. The letter contains a tentative draft of the organization's annual meeting, which represented African American leadership and fought for racial equality. Also of importance is a letter from O.C.W. Taylor to the Colored Leaders of New Orleans. The letter contains a questionnaire inquiring about a proposed project that would secure 500 acres of land on the lakefront of Lake Pontchartrain -- "The land would be between the Shushan Airport and Little Woods, and if secured the land would be divided into small plots of two and a half acres. On the two and a half acres, the group would then build homes and sell them for 3,200 to 5,000 dollars."

Among the records of civil rights cases are those concerning school desegregation, teacher salary equalization, transportation, and public accommodations. Also present are records pertaining to cases involving the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund. The civil rights case records contain several types of materials including appeals, briefs, orders, correspondence, defendants' pleas, and newspaper articles.

The political material contains correspondence, ballots, newspaper articles, election results, a commissioners list from the Seventh Ward in New Orleans, an address by A.P. Tureaud, reports, rosters of members of the Louisiana House of Representatives and members of  the Louisiana State Senate, a memorandum to the Orleans Parish Progressive Voters League, and programs. The records also include correspondence and ballots from A.P.Tureaud's run for United States Congress in 1958. Among the candidates participating in the elections were Jimmie Davis, John Petre, Revius O. Ortique, Jr., Adrian G. Duplantier, Roodney Buras, Ralph L. Jackson, Michael Buckley, Vincent H. Ebeier, deLesseps S. Morrison, Victor Schiro, Malcolm V. O'Hara, Thomas S. Buckley, Llewellyn "Lou" Scalon, Edward L. Boesch, and Nat Gros.

Among other papers are reports, proposals, a project proposal by Joseph A. Hardin and A.P. Tureaud that later became the Archive of Negro History, by-laws, bulletins, news releases, a transcript of an interview of A.P. Tureaud and Arthur Chapital concerning the history of the National Association of the Advancement of Colored People conducted by O.C.W. Taylor in 1952, pamphlets, announcements, invitations, news clippings, biographical material, collected items, and programs. Among the programs are one for the New Orleans Branch of the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History in which Dr. Carter G. Woodson attended in 1934, a program for an Alpha Phi Alpha Spring Prom in 1929, and a program for Colored Delegates at the Thirty-First Nation Recreation Congress in 1949. Photographs include those of A.P. Tureaud receiving an Honorary L.L.D. degree from Notre Dame Seminary in 1965.

The collection also includes a Currier & Ives lithograph portrait of Louisiana Lieutenant Governor Oscar J. Dunn, circa 1868-1871, likely collected by Tureaud for the Archive of Negro History.
