Content Description

The records consist of publications of the department, grant applications, resumes, course outlines, program activities, and proceedings of the National Council for Black Studies as well as a bound program for the 6th annual National Conference. Serial publications include Afro Scholar Newsletter and Afro Notes. Leaflets and broadsides are also included. Some items are announcements for the Illinois Council for Black Studies. Noted individuals in the collection include photographer Roy Lewis whose 1967 photograph titled "Father and Son - Chicago, 1967" was the cover photograph for one of the publications and was included in a photographic essay sponsored by the Afro-American Studies and Research Program in 1984. The Roy Lewis exhibit further included photographs taken at the 2nd World Festival of African Arts and Culture (FESTAC). Another journalist and photographer featured in a photographic exhibit was Osman Ibn Sharrieff of Chicago. The exhibit of his photographs was sponsored in 1983 by the department.
