Content Description
This collection includes materials collected by Dr. Joseph A. Labat of New Orleans, Louisiana on the topic of African American physicians and nurses in Louisiana and Mississippi, as well as some family material. Medical-related materials include photographic prints of Dr. Rivers Fredrick and Dr. Joseph M. Epps Sr., as well as Flint-Goodridge Hospital in New Orleans; a news clipping on the death of Eola Lyons Baker, former superintendent of nurses and director of the Nurse Training School at Flint-Goodridge; a membership roster of the New Orleans Medical Association, circa 1977; a October 1981 issue of Oregon Pharmacist featuring Dr. Labat’s brother, Mike Labat, as president of the National Pharmaceutical Association; and a March 1966 issue of the Xavier University Bulletin that features a report on students in the chemistry department at the University. Family materials include a listing of the class of 1926 of Xavier University Preparatory in New Orleans; reproductions of four issues of the School’s newsletter, The Goad, from 1949 and 1952; a 1990 news clipping on Dr. Labat’s father, Victor Labat, and a membership certificate for the Bunch Club given to the elder Labat; an advertisement featuring Dr. Labat’s wife, Deidre as a member of the New Orleans Aviation Board; and a bound folder that includes photocopies of photographs, news clippings, and other material related to Deidre’s family, the Dumas Family of Natchez, Mississippi, who included physicians and traced their lineage to Alexandre Dumas.
