Ruth Morand Baham collection
Scope and Contents
The Ruth Morand Baham collection contains news clippings, magazine articles, ephemera, collected writings, and books related to African American history with an emphasis on New Orleans and the city's first African American mayor, Ernest "Dutch" Morial and the Morial family. The collection also emphasizes Marcus Christian, J.A. Rogers, Leontyne Bryant Gumbel, Martin Luther King Jr, and others. Subjects covered in the newspaper clippings include African Americans in arts and entertainment, sports, politics, and education as well as the Civil Rights Movement. This collection also includes Baham's personal scrapbooks, dating from 1941, in which she typed biographical sketches, poems, addresses, and other information.
Items of note include rare ephemera such as a Martin Luther King Jr. “I Have a Dream” button, a World War II war loans poster, a 1946 copy of the Negro South, and two vinyl records held containing speeches from Martin Luther King and other Civil Rights activists.
