Suane-Duplantier Family papers
Content Description
The materials document the Louisiana Creole families of Suane and Duplantier, which can be traced back to 18th century St. Domingue. The families included cigarmakers, carpenters, and plasterers. The January 2010 donation includes photographs (both originals, reprints, and laserprinted copies) that document the families during the early 20th century and into the 1980s, including the migration of a branch of the family to Chicago during the 1920s. Of note is an original photograph (circa 1900?) of a man identified on the verso as Placide Suane, one of the founders of the Autocrat Club in New Orleans. The April 2010 donation includes genealogical charts and information compiled by Elizabeth Simmons and professional researcher Beth Stahr.The October 2010 donation includes a DVD transfer of 8mm home movies, dating from circa 1950-1968, from the family of Larry Simmons in Chicago, along with a transcript of Simmons' narration of the DVD.
Additional materials consists of photographs of family members, circa 1965-1988, a reprint of an earlier photograph of the White Family of Bogalusa, Louisiana, and an invitation to the 2008 All Saints Soiree Masked Gala, held in New Orleans.
The March 2020 addition includes photographs of members the Suane and Duplantier taken from 1913-1917, though some photographs also feature members of the Simmons family. Also included is a handwritten index written by Elizabeth Simmons identifying the subjects of the photographs. The photographs primarily feature Ernestine Suane Simmons. This addendum also contains a short genealogy of Octavie Antonia Lange Duplantier.
