Content Description

The addendum to the John Lee Tilley papers includes a small amount of material that touches upon various aspects of Tilley’s life and career. Included are nine letters, dating from 1956-1970, the bulk of which concern the United Baptist Missionary Convention of Maryland & Auxiliaries. One letter of note is from various members of the Convention, including Tilley, to President Dwight D. Eisenhower concerning the Montgomery Bus Boycott. It is dated 24 February 1956 and concerns “the grave racial situation now existing in southern states in general, and at Montgomery and Tuscaloosa, Alabama, in particular.” A small amount of ephemeral material related to the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and the Baltimore Branch of the NAACP, dating from circa 1959-1975, is present. Also included are programs, a day planner, and collected material are also included, as is the memorial book and program for John Lee Tilley’s funeral in 1971. Also included in the addendum is a small amount of material reflecting Tilley’s wife, Phyllis Tilley and her career in the area of education. Materials include correspondence, dated 1963-1971, concerning the Parent Child Center at Howard University, the Maryland Committee for Day Care of Children, and similar organizations. Also present is an October 1966 letter to Phyllis Tilley from Mrs. William H. Martin in Tanzania. Loose-leaf notes and note books are also included, which appear to pertain to Mrs. Tilley’s work in education.
