Yvonne and Curtis Tucker were a husband and wife team of nationally-known ceramists. Curtis Tucker, originally a painter, became interested in ceramics when he saw the work of his future wife Yvonne Edwards at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. He was born in Austin, Texas, but raised in San Diego, California.  He passed in 1992 after working with his wife for over twenty years. Yvonne Tucker is a professor of art at Florida A&M in Tallahassee. She is a ceramist and sculptor working in clay and Raku (Afro-Raku).  She received a BFA (1962) from the University of Illinois; she studied at the University of California at Los Angeles (1962-1964) and received a MFA (1968) from the Otis Art Institute of Los Angeles. The Tuckers moved to Tallahassee, Florida in 1968. The papers documents their professional lives, and include correspondence (1968-2003), exhibition brochures and catalogs; photographs; lecture notes and teaching materials; news clippings and articles; conference materials; typescript and drafts of manuscripts written by Yvonne Edwards Tucker for various publications and addresses. Also included is a scrapbook “The Tuckers, Language in Clay,” [1970-1990] documenting their work in the field. Additional materials includes exhibition brochures and a videotape “Double Visions: Yvonne & Curtis Tucker: African-American Ceramics,” a production of the LeMoyne Art Foundation, Inc., 1995.
