George Longe papers

 Collection
Identifier: 225

Scope and Contents

The papers of educator, civic leader, and Masonic official George Longe reflect his career in the area of education and his involvement as a member and Supreme Grand Commander of the Supreme Council of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry of Louisiana (AASRFML). The papers contain correspondence, news clippings, invitations, programs, photographs, financial records, speeches, and other printed items. Materials maintained by Longe document his position as principal at various New Orleans schools where he held positions, his activities with the Louisiana Education Association, and his social clubs and civic engagements. Masonic records document not only Longe's own position as a Mason, but the history of Scottish Rite freemasonry (and other rites) in Louisiana during the 19th century through the mid-twentieth century. Bound volumes include minute books of Masonic orders dating from the 19th century. Materials are in English, French, and Spanish.
