Biographical Statement
Rubie Justin Vining was born in Verdunville, Louisiana, on February 27, 1883, the son of Oscar and Louisa Vining. R. J. Vining graduated from New Orleans University and the Flint Medical College in New Orleans, where he graduated in 1907. Dr. Vining was an early investor in the Louisiana Industrial Life Insurance Company and began to wield more influence in the company as it grew, and he was ultimately elected its Medical Director. Vining also served as a lieutenant in the United States Medical Reserve Corps. Vining married Viola Smith, a former educator in New Orleans.
