Scope and Contents

The Vining family scrapbook consists of photographs, newspaper clippings, and printed ephemera collected by the family of New Orleans physician R. J. Vining. The photographs include those of the Vining family and friends, including prominent members of Creole families in New Orleans. Individuals depicted in photographs include: Ethel Brown, L.T. Burbridge family, J.J. Dejoie Sr., Joseph Dejoie Jr., Pearl Dejoie, Prudhomme Dejoie, Beatrice Dunn, Florence Anne Dunn, Hatte Feger, Vera Hernandez, N.A. Holmes family, Luther Joseph, Lois LaBranche, Lelia Meine, Camille Nickerson, Earl Reason, Anita Simineaux, Eleanor (Ella) Thompson, Clarence Thornhill, A.P. Tureaud, Lucille Dejoie Tureaud, Melvin Vining, R. J. Vining, Viola Smith Vining, Fannie C. Williams, and Mary Williams. Other individuals only identified by first names, most of whom are likely family members, include: Bea, Delia, Edna, Etta, Horatio, Lel, Mandy, Marie, Teddy, and Uncle Vernon. Also included are a tintype photograph of Dr. Vining's grandfather, who is identified by relation and not by name, as well as publicity photographs of vocalist Jimmy Mitchell of the Erskine Hawkins' Orchestra and Louis Armstrong. Armstrong's photograph is signed and inscribed to "Dr. R. Vining."

Also found within the collection are photographs of Dr. Rivers Frederick and others performing surgery at Flint-Goodridge Hospital in New Orleans, directors and other personnel of the Louisiana Industrial Life Insurance Company, a Louisiana-Texas Congregational Young People's Conference, the Straight College class of 1935, grade school classmates of Viola Smith, African American soldiers, and a hospital tent during a flu epidemic. Photographers for these photographs include Villard Paddio, Brennan, and A. P. Bedou of New Orleans and Hannie's Studio in Biloxi, Mississippi.

Newspaper images of Janet Blair (1946) and Hazel Scott (1942) from the (New York) Sunday News, as well as printed ephemera consisting of invitations and announcement cards for Xavier University of Louisiana, Girls High School of Boston, Neola Academy of Beauty Culture, and the Moonlight Boy's Stock Club, various graduation ceremonies and weddings, and an obituary notice for Robert Hutton Meine complete the collection.

Arrangement Note

The scrapbook pages were loose from the album which contained them, so the original order of the scrapbook has not been preserved. Pages have been separated from the album for enhanced preservation, and items which have loosened from scrapbook pages are housed in a separate folder.

Physical Access Requirements

The scrapbook is fragile due to the acidity of the original scrapbook paper. A preservation photocopy of the scrapbook is housed with the original and this copy should be utilized for research use.

The LaBranche Family papers and the papers of Rivers Frederick, among several other collections, document African American medicine in New Orleans.
