Biographical Statement

Born June 15, 1884, Raymond G. von Tobel was the only child of Nellie Harriet (nee Goodwin) and William von Tobel. After graduating from Brown University, von Tobel traveled to Georgia for a teaching position at Ballard Normal School. He later traveled to Fort Yates, where he taught among the Sioux people in North Dakota. In 1911, after his work at Fort Yates, he returned to Ballard, where he served as principal of the school. Von Tobel and his wife, who served as matron and treasurer, enjoyed long careers at Ballard. He served as principal for almost twenty-five years until his death in a car accident on July 9, 1935.
