Scope and Contents

From the Series:

Boxes 5-26

This the one of the largest series of materials in the collection. The conference's mission and primary roll began with a charter in 1932, on the eve of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's inauguration, to serve as the official nonpartisan organization of the nation's 1183 U.S. cities with populations of 30,000 or more. The work involved service by the conference's mayors on standing committees and task forces to examine and act on issues that demand special attention, such as homeland security, travel and tourism. This series has been arranged into two sub-series.

Sub-Series 1: Correspondence by State (1996-2002), box 5, consist of incoming and outgoing correspondence files for the period Morial was President of the USCM. The correspondence is primarily between Morial and mayors who were members of the USCM. The files are arranged alphabetically by state with file unit contents in chronological order.

Sub-Series 2: Office Files (1996-2002), boxes 6-26, consist of working files generated during Morial's terms as President and Vice President in 2000 and 2001. He was a member from 1996-1999, so some file dates overlap from this period. Correspondence files for presidential meetings are included. The files contain information on legislation and issues on both a national and local level for American cities. The files in this sub-series are arranged in alphabetical order by title, organizational name, or subject. Topics found throughout the series are best practices, community development, economics, employment, gun control, housing, homelessness and small business. Files for the USCM annual and winter meetings can be found throughout the series and include international and leadership meetings. A large group of correspondence files labeled "Arent Fox" contain correspondence as it relates to the lobbyist's efforts on behalf of the USCM. Correspondence files related to and as a result of the September 11th, 2001, terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington, D.C. are available under the following subject headings: cities unite, homeland security, Mayor's Emergency, Safety & Security Summit, National Action Plan/American Safety, anti-terrorism, September 11th and Safety. Of note is the International Mayor's Summit on Terrorism and Travel Tourism in 2002. Other files within the sub-series include press releases, reports, Morial's Inaugural speech 2001, and files for the National Conference of Black Mayors dating 1997-1998.
