Scope and Contents

From the Series:

The first series of the Clarie Collins Harvey papers consists of 9 boxes of correspondence covering the years 1907 through 1989, as well as cards, postcards, and invitations dated 1959 through 1986, with some undated pieces. Most of the early correspondence is family related, letters from her mother and father, and the almost daily writings of her husband, Martin L. Harvey, during the later part of the 1930s through the 1940s. Other correspondence pertains to her family businesses and her various activities relating to civil rights and civic and religious functions.

Personal papers in boxes 10 through 13 consist of information on Harvey and her family. This includes birth and death certificates, passport, an interview conducted by John Dittmer, wedding mementos, certificates and awards, financial and insurance records, family writings, and numerous photographs of family, friends, and associates. Other items include schedules, itineraries, membership cards, and numerous address and phone lists.

Writings are housed in boxes 14 through 21. Harvey's writings date from 1921 to 1988, some in notebooks, some relating to her academic years, and others deal with her church and civic activities. Portions of a diary she kept from 1971 through 1975 are also housed in this series. The revised and published editions of her book, From Caterpillar to Butterfly, are also present, as are appointment calendars, undated writings, and speeches arranged chronologically from 1945 through 1986.
