Scope and Contents

The first series of the Frank S. Horne papers addendum includes personal and family records. The series begins with a set of letters sent by Horne's brother, Errol, to Cora Horne (mother), Lena Hornse (aunt) and Burke Horne (brother). Errol's letters date from January 1915 to November 1917 and were written while he was serving in the United States military. The letters are written from Fort Mills and Fort Santiago in the Philippines, Fort D.A. Russell in Wyoming, and Columbus, New Mexico. In his early correspondence, Errol writes of his enlistment in the military and arrival in Manila, his life and activities as a soldier, and detailed descriptions of the physical and cultural aspects of Manila. In his initial letter to his mother in January 1915, Errol notes the presence of African American regiments and states that he could have enlisted in a white regiment, but "I preferred succeeding as a colored man." In letters written later in 1915, Errol comments on the possibility of the United States entering into the war effort. By February 1916, Errol writes from Wyoming and informs his family of his marriage to Lottie Benston. Letters in 1917 include Errol's thoughts on the effects that war will have on opportunities for African Americans.

Frank S. Horne's own correspondence, both originals and photocopies, touches upon his civil service work in housing and his interest in writing. In a 1933 letter (photocopy), James Weldon Johnson offers his assistance in helping Horne find publishers for his poetry. Horne's outgoing mail consists of letters to editors at Esquire Magazine and Opportunity Magazine seeking outlets for his writing, as well as a series of letters to his wife, Mercedes. Other correspondents include: Thomas M. Hall, Nathaniel S. Keith, and Eric Zeigl. Personal records reflect Horne's position as dean at Fort Valley Normal and Industrial School in Fort Valley, Georgia, his optometry career, and positions with governmental agencies. Also present are photographs, newspaper clippings, invitations, and programs.
