Writings: "E Pluribus Unum," typescript, undated
Scope and Contents
Series II comprises the bulk of the collection and reflects Horne's interest in literature and writing. Included are typescript drafts of two unpublished collections of his poetry, "Songs for a Lynching Bee" and "Deep as a Grave," as well as a third, untitled, gathering of poems. The "Lynching Bee" typescript is accompanied by a memorandum by W.E.B. Du Bois offering his comments on Horne's collection. Typescripts and hand scripts of individual poems are followed by the same formats for Horne's prose work, which includes essays, short stories, a book review, and a speech. Publications in which Horne's writing appears complete the series. Of note is an undated typescript entitled "What Democracy" composed by Horne and Henry Lee Moon, which concerns the position of African Americans in various aspects of American society.
