Scope and Contents

The collection includes Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) memoranda regarding counterintelligence and surveillance on the Ku Klux Klan and other hate groups in the greater New Orleans area as well as FBI reports on these groups, also including the Bogalusa Civic and Voters League. The bulk of these materials, dating from 1964 to 1971, regard the Klan in Bogalusa, Louisiana. Complementing these are collected articles on the Deacons for Defense and Justice, briefs and other research materials for lawsuits involving the Klan, including U. S. vs. the Original Knights of the Ku Klux Klan and Robert Hicks and A. Z. Young vs. Claxton Knight et al. These materials include listing of the members of the Bogalusa Klan. Also included is correspondence relating to the Freedom of Information Act requests issued by Hill regarding his request for FBI documents on hate groups in Bogalusa.

Items of note include a flier for a Deacons for Defense and Justice meeting in New Orleans and a flier from Ann Arbor, Michigan, indicating the work of Deacon Henry Austan establishing Deacons chapters throughout the South and speaking at universities nationwide.
