Scope and Contents

The records of Doley Securities, Inc. encompass the firm’s working files for Syndication, the United States government-owned asset management company the Resolution Trust Corporation, prospectuses, underwriting agreements, audit documentation, trading statements, and reports. The records also contain the firm’s proposals in response to various corporate and governmental requests. Of note are correspondence, board and committee files for Ambassador Doley and the firm’s work in Africa. Countries represented within these files include Angola, Botswana, Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Namibia, Nigeria, South Africa, and Zambia. Of note are files related to the African Development Bank, the Corporate Council on Africa, and the Southern Africa Enterprise Development Fund (SAEDF). Numerous city and state governments are represented within the records, as well as corporations such as Bear Stearns, a New York-based global investment bank, securities, trading, and brokerage firm that failed in 2008 due to the global financial crisis.

Personages represented within the records include: Kofi B. Bota; John J. Mulcahy Jr; Justice Revious Ortique; Secretary of the Interior John G. Watt; Dorcas D. Bowles, acting president of Atlanta University; Luther S. Williams, president of Atlanta University; Lawrence Coward, senior executive vice president of Coca Cola; John A. Washington, Associate at Doley Securities; Conrail; Louis A. Gerdes Jr, attorney in New Orleans; Vernon Johnson Mwaanga, Zambian diplomat and politician; Alassane N'Diaye, French-Senegalese footballer; and Babacar Ndiaye, 5th elected President of African Development Bank.

There are some personal papers for Ambassador Doley throughout the records with documents that highlight his civic activities including a small amount of news clippings, photographs, and certificates; VHS videotapes of Doley’s appearances on TV news programs; and a speech by Doley upon becoming the first Director of Minerals Management Service (1982). Other documentation available within the collection relate to the Madam C. J. Walker Estate (1987-2008) and land deeds and gas and oil leases in Navarro County, Texas. These documents chronicle deals dating from 1848-1955 and involves Jehu Peoples and family, Jacob Eliot, John and Mary Cartwright and family, Mattie Wall, Mills Tooke, and others.

Additionally included is an interview transcript is one of a series in Remembering Wallstreet: 1950-1980, an oral history project documenting Wall Street’s history and culture through the unique perspectives of some of its most notable figures. Ambassador Harold Doley was interviewed on June 13, 2016 by Melanie Shorin of The Narrative Trust. The interview covers Doley’s family background in New Orleans and East Texas, including his father’s business of a neighborhood community grocery store that was involved in the civil rights movement as a local meeting place. Doley’s early interest and motivations in becoming involved with the New York Stock Exchange as a broker in 1968.

Lastly, the records contain 19 bound volumes of red herring prospectuses, dating from 1987-2009, issued by Doley Securities, Inc. with projects involving Clark Atlanta University, the City of New Orleans, the New Orleans Aviation Board, and the Rural Housing Trust. Materials regarding development projects in Africa and reports of the African Development Bank date from 1977-2007. Of note is a binder (2006-2007) regarding the acquisition of Sony/ATV Music Publishing by singer/entertainer Michael Jackson.

Founded in 1975, Doley Securities, Inc. is the oldest American Black-owned and operated investment banking firm in the United States. The company has been housed for three decades in the Doley Building located in the Central Business District of New Orleans, Louisiana.
