Varnette P. Honeywood papers

Varnette Honeywood originally from St. Joseph, Louisiana, and Magnolia, Mississippi, migrated to California with her parents. She was an alumna of Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia, and attended the University of Southern California receiving her Master’s Degree in Education in 1974. She founded Black Lifestyles Fine Art and Black Lifestyles Classics, a publishing company with her sister, Stephanie. Many of her works have been used for book jackets, book and music illustrations including Bill Cosby’s Little Bill Books for Beginning Readers.

The collection consists of exhibition materials, family and biographical information regarding Honeywood and her work as an artist. Also included are information and music CD from the gospel trio The Union. The Union, a gospel musical trio who have been working together since the early 1990s provide lead and background vocals for many projects, community services and they have worked abroad. The group’s members are Simone Appleby, Kelita Bryant and Leslie Gardner who are all from Buffalo, New York. Also present in the collection are a number of posters, dating from 1979-2003, featuring Honeywood's artwork.
