This collection consists of 31 Betacam SP videotapes, which contain raw footage of scholars interviewed for Tom Thurman's documentary, "Movies of Color: Black Southern Cinema. A Portrait of Independent African-American Filmmaking," as well as examples of pre-WWII films by African American filmmakers. The subject matter covered in the documentary includes African American arts and culture, primarily independently-made films with a southern focus prior to WWII, plus topics such as the Great Migration, segregated movie theaters, the shadow cast by D.W. Griffith and other creators of stereotypical images, and the careers of artists such as Spencer Williams, Oscar Micheaux, Eloyce Gist, and Clarence Muse.
